Sometimes, a meme takes hold of the internet world for no good reason. I’m talking about the kinds of memes that are so random; all you can do is shrug and say to yourself: “Alrighty then. On with my day.” I feel like you have to take a lot of memes with a pinch of salt these days.
The latest bizarre thing to emerge in 2017 comes in the form of a strange, purple bird. It goes by the name of Trash Dove (so millenial) and was created by Florida-based artist Syd Weiler back in September 2016. What started as a sketch of one bird turned into a sticker collection on Facebook, and now Trash Dove is taking over the world.
Although Trash Dove sounds like a niche sub-genre of emo music, I think I can get on board with it. Want to show your excitement? Trash Dove can help you out. Want to agree with a statement? If you look really closely, this purple-feathered fiend looks like he’s vigorously nodding.
The world first found out about Trash Dove after a Thai Facebook page created a truly bizarre video featuring the purple bird. It quickly went viral, accumulating over 4 million views. Plenty of people have started using the sticker in the comment sections of articles too. I’m not the only one that thinks Trash Dove is the best thing to happen this year. Sorry, Donald Trump – Trash Dove is the people’s choice.
The creator, Syd Weiler, subsequently thanked her fans for their support: “Hello Thailand, thank you all so so much for your support. I’m really glad that you like the stickers.” Weiler doesn’t taken Trash Dove too seriously, though. Back in October 2016, she posted to Facebook: “In case you didn’t know, I made some fantastically dumb iOS stickers, you can spam your friends and family with them!” Little did she know that the whole world would fall in love with this fantastically dumb bird.
I told you. It’s weird, and I couldn’t really even tell you what is going on. I’m not the only one that’s confused, too. Kaitlyn Tiffany, of The Verge, reckoned the fact that “birds are funny, and flailing is a common response to the trips and trials of every life on the web” – one of the reasons for its success.
Not everyone is falling for Trash Dove’s charms, however. There’s even a petition to remove Trash Dove from the Internet. Personally, I hope Trash Dove sticks around for the considerable future. We need some good in the world, after all.
